Event to raise money and support literacy project, Leaders are Readers

Saint Paul, MN – Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute, a nonprofit leadership organization focused on social change, is organizing its 7th Annual Community Celebration and Fundraiser to support its literacy project. The event will be held on Friday, October 27 (8:00 A.M. – 9:00 A.M.), at The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis.

Now in its seventh year, Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute works with families to improve literacy and help children discover the joy in reading. Since the Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute established the Community Celebration and Fundraiser, over 19,000 diverse books have been donated to children & families and schools. The group has reached more than 5,000 children through its Leaders and Readers Program.

The annual event helps the nonprofit support the local community, share its work, and raise funds to inspire the next generation of leaders. Planting People Growing Justice is dedicated to improving literacy rates in children to reduce future incarceration rates. School children who are not proficient in reading by the 4th grade are four times more likely to drop out of school. School dropouts are three-and-a-half times more likely to be arrested.

“We want to promote and foster leadership development in students across the nation,” Dr. Artika R. Tyner, Planting People founder, said. “Literacy is directly connected to school dropout rates. If we can improve the literacy rates of children, we prevent kids from dropping out of school. Staying in school will then end the pipeline to prison and create new pipelines to success. By improving the educational outcomes for youth, the future can be altered.”

Founded in 2014, Dr. Tyner’s leadership development and community engagement work have been the backbone of Planting People Growing Justice. The nonprofit’s methodology focuses on the future of social change and community-building to provide a bright future for all.
