Mansfield Divorce Attorney Explains Impact of New Texas Child Support Law and Earns Tarrant County Attorney of the Year Honor

A significant change to Texas child support guidelines is creating new financial realities for families across Tarrant County, and Mansfield divorce attorney Wendy L. Hart is urging parents to act quickly to protect their interests. At the same time, Hart has been recognized for her service to veterans with the prestigious Tarrant County Attorney of the Year award from Texas Lawyers for Texas Veterans.

Texas recently to $11,700 — a substantial jump from the previous cap of roughly $9,200. According to Hart, the shift will have a meaningful impact on many families.

“What that means is they will calculate child support based on income up to $11,700 per month,” Hart said. “That obviously increases the amount of child support that a parent can receive.”

For higher-income households, the change represents what Hart describes as “a pretty significant impact,” with roughly a $2,500 swing in the income considered for support calculations.

The new guideline is expected to affect both new divorce filings and cases currently moving through the court system in Mansfield and throughout Tarrant County.

As an experienced divorce attorney, Hart says one of the most common — and costly — mistakes she sees is delaying temporary orders.

“What I see happening a lot is that people get into their divorce and they don’t get their temporary orders set,” she explained. “Then they’re going without support and they start struggling. It’s hard to get the bills paid starting out.”

Hart advises anyone currently going through a divorce to move quickly to establish child support and other temporary arrangements so financial stability can be maintained while the case is pending.

In addition to guiding families through complex divorce and custody matters, Hart was recently named Tarrant County Attorney of the Year by Texas Lawyers for Texas Veterans — her second award from the organization.

“It was quite a compliment. I was really excited to receive that award,” Hart said.

Her work focuses on providing legal assistance, discounted services, and pro bono representation to veterans and military families. The mission is deeply personal.

“My husband served 20 years in the Army, and I like to give back to those who serve in our military,” she said. “We can say thank you, but just giving words to people isn’t enough. You need to put your money where your mouth is.”

Hart regularly volunteers at legal clinics and accepts referrals to ensure veterans have access to quality representation in family law matters.

Military service often creates custody and visitation complications that civilian families rarely face. Deployments, long-distance parenting schedules, and virtual visitation arrangements must all be carefully structured.

“When a parent is deployed, obviously they can’t visit,” Hart said. “So we have to set up video visits and create parenting plans that work around military service.”

Her experience in these cases allows her to craft solutions that protect both parental rights and the best interests of the children.

With the new child support calculation now in effect, Hart says the need for knowledgeable legal guidance has never been greater.

“This change is going to affect strategy for anyone going through a divorce right now,” she noted. “Getting into court and getting support in place quickly can make all the difference.”

As a dedicated divorce attorney serving Mansfield and the surrounding Tarrant County area, Hart continues to focus on helping clients move forward with financial security and strong parenting plans.
