SCg Shoe Co - The First Rider-Owned Shoe Company - Challenges the Disposable Footwear Cycle in BMX and MTB
“Riders are used to replacing shoes over and over because they break down so fast. That’s the real problem. We built SCg to fix that. Every decision we make — from materials to construction — is based on how the shoe actually performs under stress, not how it looks in a catalog. Owning our factory means we can solve problems instead of working around them.”— Steven Caro, Founder & Rider, SCg Shoe Co
For BMX and MTB riders, footwear failure isn’t an inconvenience — it directly impacts performance, control, and safety. SCg Shoe Co was built in 1999 to solve that problem. Over 25 years, that mission has evolved into full manufacturing control — including 10 years of production in Colombia and 8 years owning and operating their own factory in Bogotá. The first rider-owned shoe company in the BMX world, SCg delivers purpose-built shoes engineered to withstand real riding conditions.

For many BMX and MTB riders, worn-out shoes are part of the routine. Soles lose grip. Stitching fails. Impact protection breaks down — sometimes within weeks of consistent riding. These failures don’t just shorten the lifespan of the product; they erode rider confidence, degrade pedal control, and stall progression.

SCg Shoe Co was built to end that cycle — and has been doing it since 1999.

Founded after a skatepark crash exposed the fundamental shortcomings of traditional skate shoes for BMX riding, Steven Caro drew on his architectural background to design something better. That singular problem — shoes not built for the actual demands of riding — became the founding principle of SCg: the first rider-owned and operated shoe company in BMX. More than 25 years later, that principle still drives every product decision.

What makes SCg structurally different from every other brand in the space is what’s under the shoe. Where most riding shoes use thin, roughly 1.5mm outsoles that puncture under pedal pin pressure, SCg builds with a 5mm pin-resistant outsole base — more than three times thicker than the industry standard. Soles are both glued and stitched to prevent delamination under stress. Every upper is built with reinforced toe and heel protection. Premium materials are sourced globally — including Spanish and German adhesives, French waterproofing agents, Mexican textiles, and high-end Colombian hides — boxs, laces, insoles, outsoles, and shipping cartons are made in Colombia, and assembled entirely in SCg’s own factory in Bogotá, Colombia.

That factory isn’t a convenience. It’s the result of a hard lesson. After a critical error by an overseas production partner in South Korea threatened the company, SCg made the decision to move all manufacturing to Colombia — 10 years ago. For the last 8 of those years, SCg has owned and operated its own factory in Bogotá, building deep expertise in controlling every stage of development from first sketch to finished pair, with zero reliance on outside production.

SCg’s roots run deep in the BMX community. The brand grew out of Greenville, North Carolina — known in the sport as “Pro Town” — and has been part of a scene that has produced over 34 professional BMX riders and 21 gold medals. Today, SCg shoes are available through REI in Tampa FL, bike shops across the nation, alongside direct-to-consumer channels, with headquarters based in Tampa, Florida.

This manufacturing model allows SCg to do something most brands can’t: respond. Rider feedback doesn’t get absorbed into a seasonal product cycle and returned 18 months later. It gets tested, refined, and implemented — on a timeline that makes sense for the riders living with the product.

MANUFACTURING PARTNERSHIPS

Beyond its own product line, SCg Shoe Co works with a select group of brands as a manufacturing partner. Unlike traditional contract factories that prioritize volume over product integrity, SCg collaborates only with companies that align with its approach to design, quality, and performance.

This includes brands both within and outside of action sports that require a higher level of control over how their footwear is built. By keeping design, prototyping, and production under one roof in Bogotá, SCg gives partners the ability to develop products with the same precision, durability, and responsiveness that defines its own line.

SCg is not a mass-production facility. It functions as a hands-on development and manufacturing partner — each project approached with the same philosophy that drives the brand’s internal products: solve real problems, refine through testing, build footwear that performs under actual use.

SCg’s long-term focus is not volume — it’s longevity. Building products that last longer and perform better under real conditions, made by people who actually ride them.

For riders tired of replacing shoes that fail under pressure, SCg offers a different answer: footwear designed after a crash, refined over 25 years, built in-house, and proven where it matters most. As the action sports footwear market continues to grow, SCg Shoe Co stands as the original alternative to the disposable product cycle — purpose-built, rider-owned, and still independent after more than two decades.
