“Inheriting the doctor’s spirit • Building a healthy society” was the theme of this assembly. The aim of the assembly is to build a platform for multiple parties to participate in medical public welfare projects, summarize the successful experiences of the previous four sessions, align with the characteristics of the times, grasp the trends, and firmly uphold and promote the spirit of physicians. This conference aims to unite and mobilize efforts to promote the new development of physician public welfare through action and contribute to the health sector in China.
Yang Guanlin pointed out in his speech that since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, President Xi Jinping with the Party Central Committee has adhered to the strategic position of prioritizing the development of people’s health, and a new journey has started in the construction of a healthy China. The spirit of doctors is a noble moral cognition and internal power deeply rooted in Chinese culture, reflecting the selflessness, responsibility, and dedication of doctors. The inheritance of the doctor’s spirit plays an irreplaceable role in the high-quality development of Chinese healthcare. Therefore, Yang Guanlin put forward several recommendations. First of all, physicians should be merciful and benevolent, use medical skills as tools, and inherit the doctor’s spirit. Then physicians should treat both the symptoms and the root causes of patients’ illnesses, and take it as their own responsibility to promote the construction of a healthy China. Last but not the least, we should expand the space for development, cultivate integrity, and make good use of public welfare forces. We should take on the sacred mission of advancing the development of a healthy China and safeguarding the health of the people, and make greater contributions to promoting a global community of health for all.

In Zhong Nanshan’s speech, he recalled the five years of the establishment and development of Chinese Physicians Assembly for Humanity. He said that the original intention of the assembly was to better promote and inherit the spirit of doctors. To be a doctor, one should be kind, intelligent, and honest. In ancient times, doctors were from famous families. They had the cultivation of benevolence, compassion, intelligence, and meticulous thinking. Zhong Nanshan stated that the most important aspect of a doctor’s spirit is benevolence. Medical workers need to gradually deepen the concept of benevolence when communicating with patients in order to continuously innovate, forge ahead, and make greater contributions to solving human health problems.

The development of public welfare and charity serves as the foundation for physician philanthropy. Cao Xirong pointed out the importance of public welfare charity in the development of Chinese Physicians Assembly for Humanity in his speech. He said that philanthropy is not only the symbol of social progress, but also an important manifestation of human civilization. And medical public welfare carries the mission of saving lives and healing the wounded, and it also embodies people’s aspirations for a healthy and better life. Cao Xirong shared two points of reflection and insight. First, it is essential to solidify the cultural foundation, establish a healthy and inclusive environment for the development of public welfare, and contribute to the high-quality development of this industry. Second, breaking away from traditional models and exploring innovative and diversified paths for philanthropy is crucial to provide sustainable internal momentum for the high-quality development of public welfare.
Putting life first, prioritizing health, and inheriting the spirit of doctors is a mission that bridges the past and the future. At the assembly, Li Lanjuan, Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered a presentation titled “Inheriting the spirit of doctors and promoting medical development” via video. She said that we must serve patients, tend to their needs, and focus on alleviating their suffering in this new age of medical care. We also should continuously increase the sense of responsibility and mission to protect the country and people, take on social responsibility proactively, and demonstrate comprehensive, humanistic care throughout the whole process.
During the “Expert Proposal from Medical Professionals” segment, Gao Xingcheng, Vice President of The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University bravely took on a doctors’ responsibility and spoke out for his patients. He focused on the challenges in cancer prevention and treatment for Chinese patients, and brought forth a proposal titled “Strengthening Charitable and Public Welfare Forces to Support the Prevention and Treatment of Cancer in China”. In his proposal, Xingcheng comprehensively reviewed and summarized the current status, issues, and development trends of cancer patients in China. He called for the strengthening the joint efforts of public welfare forces to strive for the goal of “health for all”.
Medical public welfare is not only an act of philanthropy but also a social responsibility. It is related to everyone’s safety and health, and it is also the cornerstone of national prosperity. During the conference, Wang Xiaobing, Director of Public Health Professional Committee of China Primary Health Care Foundation, and Shen Shuguang, Vice President of China Association of Social Security and the Director of Medical Insurance Professional Committee, delivered presentations respectively on the topics of “Sharing by the Public Health Professional Committee” and “Authoritative Interpretation: Make Good Use of Social Forces to Actively Promote the Development of Medical Public Welfare”. They shared their insights and experiences on how to leverage the integration of various social forces to transition from providing care for the sick to ensuring that patients have access to high-quality medical services.

This initiative is committed to providing more efficient services to patients.

They stated that in the future, they will focus on patient-centered care and aim to reduce patients’ costs and improve their quality of life. Their mission will be to assist patients and operate as a new type of medical public welfare organization that integrates patient services, doctor support, and government service. Their goal is to enhance the quality of life and contribute to the mission of promoting a healthy China, working together to achieve the beautiful vision of everyone enjoying a healthy and happy life.

In the Government Work Report 2022, important tasks were proposed such as “improving healthcare service capabilities” and “strengthening social security services”. The Report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China emphasized placing the safeguarding of people’s health in a strategic position of top priority, building a solid defense line for a healthy China, and achieving the coordinated development of people’s health and the economy and society. This year’s conference also collaborated with China Philanthropy Times to launch the “2023 Search for Medical Public Welfare Stars” activity. It aimed to collect widely across society and recognize categories such as “Most Beautiful Philanthropic Doctors”, “Outstanding Philanthropic Medical Science Communicators”, “Excellent Cases of Medical Philanthropy Projects”, “Outstanding Cases of Corporate Social Responsibility in the Medical Field”. During the conference, the 2023 Annual Observation Report on China’s Medical Public Welfare was released.
“The way of being a physician is not to discuss right and wrong, criticize other physicians, or be proud of one’s own virtue. The aspiration is to save lives, and the great physician acts with sincerity.”
Under the video guidance of Zhong Nanshan, Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, doctors from across the country took the “Great Physician’s Sincerity” oath. The resounding oath, which deeply touched our hearts, fully demonstrates the spirit and unwavering determination of Chinese physicians to dedicate themselves to the cause of public health.

In her concluding speech, Liu Ying, Chairperson of Beijing Health Alliance Charitable Foundation, expressed that this conference holds profound significance with rich content. It has achieved the original intention of bringing everyone together to discuss medical and health matters, promoting doctor-patient harmony, and supporting physicians in their charitable endeavors. Staying true to the original mission and moving forward with determination, future conferences will always take up the mantle of inheriting the spirit of physicians and have everyone work together to build a better future for the health of all!
