Dr Jeffrey Mathews Calls for Greater Awareness of Oral-Systemic Health Connection
Dr Jeffrey Mathews, DDS, a leading cosmetic and family dentist based in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, is using the release of his new in-depth interview, In Conversation with Dr Jeffrey Mathews: The Future of Dentistry and Beyond, to raise awareness of the strong connection between oral health and overall systemic health.
Drawing from his 15 years of clinical experience, Dr Mathews emphasises that dental care should be viewed as preventative healthcare rather than a cosmetic afterthought. “We’re learning every year how the mouth impacts the body,” he said in the interview. “Gum disease is linked to heart disease, diabetes, inflammation, and so much more. When people understand this, they realise dental visits aren’t optional—they’re essential.”
According to the CDC, nearly 47% of adults aged 30 and over have some form of periodontal disease. Research from the American Heart Association also shows that poor oral health significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular complications. For Dr Mathews, these figures underscore a deeper public health issue. “We have the knowledge to prevent so many problems before they become serious,” he said. “Small daily habits and regular dental checks can change long-term outcomes.”
The interview also highlighted the emotional and psychological side of oral health. A 2023 ADA survey found that 28% of adults avoid smiling because they feel insecure about their teeth. “Confidence isn’t superficial,” Dr Mathews explained. “When someone hides their smile, it affects how they interact with the world. Restoring that confidence can transform a person’s wellbeing.”
Dr Mathews advocates for simple, accessible steps that anyone can take at home—regardless of their dentist or location:
-
Maintain consistent brushing and flossing routines.
-
Schedule routine cleanings every six months.
-
Pay attention to early signs of gum inflammation.
-
Treat oral health as part of whole-body wellness.
“You don’t need advanced tools or expensive treatments to start taking control of your health,” Dr Mathews said. “Awareness is the first step. Action is the second.”
He also encouraged people to think proactively: “If something feels off—bleeding gums, recurring headaches, jaw pain—don’t ignore it. The earlier you address an issue, the better the long-term outcome.”
Dr Mathews hopes the interview helps people rethink their relationship with oral care. “Integrity guides everything we do,” he said. “We treat every patient like family. But even if someone never visits my practice, I want them to know how much control they have over their own wellbeing.”
Dr Mathews encourages individuals and families to make their oral health a priority this year by staying consistent, staying aware, and treating dental care as a foundational part of whole-body health.
