TCU student urges young professionals to link history, habits, and real-world experience

William Lown, a Tarrant County–based student and emerging professional, is using his recent feature interview to raise awareness about the importance of discipline, historical understanding, and practical experience in shaping long-term career success.

In the interview, William shared how his journey—from New York City to boarding school, global study, and internships in public service and finance—has shaped his belief that progress is built through consistent habits and informed decisions. “I’ve always wanted to understand how things fit together,” William said. “History, markets, and people all influence each other.”

Recent data supports his message. According to the World Economic Forum, over 50% of workers will need significant skill development to adapt to changing industries by 2027. At the same time, studies show that students who gain early work experience are twice as likely to secure full-time roles after graduation. William believes understanding context—not just skills—makes that experience more meaningful.

Through internships with a victims-of-communism organisation, the U.S. Senate, and an investment banking firm, William gained exposure to how decisions affect people and systems. “Those roles taught me that preparation matters,” he said. “Good outcomes don’t happen by accident. They come from discipline and learning from the past.”

William is also advocating for young people to build focus outside the classroom. Research from the Aspen Institute shows students involved in sport and structured activities are 40% more likely to perform well academically. William credits basketball, tennis, and strategy games like backgammon for sharpening his thinking. “Small habits add up,” he noted. “Consistency beats speed.”

William encourages students to take simple steps on their own:

  • Study history to understand patterns

  • Seek internships to gain real work experience

  • Build daily habits that improve focus and discipline

  • Reflect on decisions before rushing forward

“You don’t need to rush to succeed,” William said. “You need to build steadily and stay curious.”
