Dr. Drew Brown Advocates for Holistic Spine Health: “Surgery Should Never Be the First Step”
TAMPA, FL – January 8, 2026 – Board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Drew Brown IV is urging patients across Florida to rethink how they approach back and neck pain. Through his practice, DB4Spine, Dr. Brown is raising awareness around the importance of non-surgical, holistic treatment for spinal conditions—emphasizing that surgery should be a last resort, not a first option.
“Too many patients come to me believing that surgery is the only way forward,” said Dr. Brown. “The truth is, most spinal issues can be managed—or even resolved—through consistent exercise, smart nutrition, and the right education. My job is to help people understand that.”
According to the CDC, nearly 40% of adults report back pain annually. Yet research shows that conservative care, including physical therapy and lifestyle changes, can prevent or delay the need for spinal surgery in most cases. Despite this, many patients are quickly routed into surgical paths without fully exploring alternatives.
Dr. Brown, who founded DB4Spine in 2019 after years in corporate medical systems, created his Tampa-based practice to put patients back in control. He prioritizes long consultations, explains diagnoses in detail, and builds treatment plans that start with prevention.
“My first step is always education,” Dr. Brown said. “Once patients understand how their spine works, they feel less fear—and more power to take action on their own.”
Dr. Brown’s philosophy is shaped by his personal and professional experiences. As a former NCAA Division I basketball player, he understands the power of movement and conditioning. As a fellowship-trained spine surgeon, he’s also seen what happens when patients are rushed into procedures without proper support.
“Movement is medicine,” he added. “When we focus on fitness and core strength, we see real changes—not just on imaging, but in how people feel and function.”
Alongside this local advocacy, Dr. Brown is also committed to global spine health access. He volunteers regularly with the FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital in Ghana, treating complex spinal deformities in both children and adults who would otherwise go without care.
“It’s about service—wherever the patient is,” he said. “Whether it’s West Africa or West Tampa, everyone deserves the chance to feel strong in their own body again.”
Dr. Brown also recently completed his recertification with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS), extending his board-certified status through 2036—a distinction that places him in the top tier of surgical practitioners.
This fall, DB4Spine is launching a community initiative to promote spine-friendly habits—including posture workshops, patient education events, and fitness partnerships. The goal is to equip more people with the knowledge they need to make informed, confident decisions about their spine health.
Call to Action: What You Can Do Today
Dr. Brown recommends a few simple steps for anyone struggling with back or neck pain:
-
Start moving. Even 15 minutes of walking or light stretching per day can reduce stiffness.
-
Strengthen your core. A strong core supports the spine. Planks and basic balance exercises help.
-
Check your posture. Slouching at a desk or in the car adds long-term pressure on spinal joints.
-
Ask questions. Before agreeing to surgery, always explore physical therapy and lifestyle-based care options.
“You don’t need to be a surgeon to understand your spine,” Dr. Brown said. “You just need someone willing to explain it.”
