Multidisciplinary Artist Rodolfo Canete Jr. Holds Solo Exhibition at Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre
Galleria Camaya proudly presented a compelling solo exhibition by Hong Kong-based Filipino artist Rodolfo Canete Jr., at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre (HKVAC) in Central. This exhibition, part of a cultural event that marks Galleria Camaya’s return to HKVAC in celebration of the Philippines’ National Arts Month, spotlighting the rich and dynamic landscape of contemporary Filipino art.
Canete, a seasoned journalist, curator, and self-taught multidisciplinary artist, brings a diversity of approach to his artistic expression through a fusion of media, technology, and photographic processes. Furthermore, Canete’s work displays an eclectic range of style and theme informed by his academic research and reportage on a range of issues, including migrant workers’ rights, ethnic minority communities, protest movements, emerging technologies, and environmental concern.
This exhibition, titled Flowing Breaks: Acrylic and Ink Works, however, marks a deliberate pause in Canete’s ongoing practice. Known primarily for conceptual mixed media, photography, and installation works, this new series represents a conscious shift toward a slower, tactile engagement with process and material. Developed over several months, the works combine abstract acrylic paintings on canvas and alcohol ink compositions on archival paper, embodying a meditative counterweight to the accelerated pace of contemporary life he is so engaged in his work as a journalist and technology consultant.

In his own words, Canete explains, “Rather than approaching abstraction as a fixed visual language, I treat it as a process of negotiation. Paint and ink are allowed to move according to their own physical properties, gravity, viscosity, absorption, and chance. I relinquish full control, acting instead as a guide who introduces color, flow direction, and interruption while allowing nature to determine the final form. This tension between intention and surrender becomes central to the work.”
The artist’s deliberate color combinations and controlled flow mirror his attempt to balance living on the edge of rapid technological change with cultivating moments of stillness and reflection. These paintings are not decorative abstractions but records of attention—traces of time spent listening rather than reacting.
