Houston Artist Ben Workman Expands Jumper Maybach Art Practice Into Collectible Design Market
Houston-based artist Ben Workman, who works under the professional name Jumper Maybach, has expanded his abstract painting practice into a multi-category product operation encompassing footwear, watches, handbags, apparel, eyewear, and home goods sold through a direct-to-consumer storefront. The expansion follows more than a decade of exhibition activity that has included presentations at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture in Richmond, Virginia, the Villa Pisani National Museum in Venice, Italy, the Museum of the Americas in Doral, Florida, and exhibitions in Paris and other international venues.
Workman also holds permanent public art commissions in Washington, D.C., according to the brand’s website.
Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1963, Workman created the Jumper Maybach persona in 2010 after a 37-year career in federal government. He has described the artistic identity as a vehicle for addressing themes of discrimination, bullying, and intolerance through abstract painting. The origin story and creative process were documented in “The Jumper Maybach Story,” a feature-length documentary directed by Alan DeHerrera and produced by Pepe Serna, an actor known for roles in films including Scarface and The Jerk. The documentary received an Award of Merit from the Accolade Global Film Competition in 2017 in the LGBT category.

The brand’s commercial extensions have included a collaboration with German textile company FRAAS on a line of scarves featuring Workman’s compositions, and a 2023 partnership with SpeedPro to create limited-edition vehicle wraps for Mercedes-Benz cars incorporating his artwork. The brand’s online storefront sells original paintings, canvas prints, and product categories spanning sneakers, automatic watches, and several lines of handbags.
Workman operates out of Sawyer Yards at Sabine Street Studios in Houston, a complex that houses a concentration of working artists in the city’s arts district. He has been named the Official Artist of Pride in both Houston and Richmond, Virginia. His work has been profiled in Houstonia Magazine and Voyage Houston.
The direct-to-consumer model Workman has adopted reflects broader patterns in the contemporary art market. The Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report estimated the global art market at approximately $65 billion in 2023, with a growing share of transactions occurring through direct sales and digital channels rather than traditional auction houses and dealer networks.
