Chairman Hu Baifan Publishes in Zhejiang Daily: “Innovation Is Never Done Behind Closed Doors”
On March 23, Mr. Hu Baifan, Chairman of NHU, published a signed article in Zhejiang Daily titled “Innovation Is Never Done Behind Closed Doors.” The article highlights NHU’s commitment to innovation-driven development, guided by its R&D philosophy of being “demand-oriented and internal-external cordinated,” and shares our experience in building an open, collaborative innovation ecosystem to achieve high-quality growth.
Innovation Is Never Done Behind Closed Doors
Zhijiang Xinyu emphasizes the importance of leveraging external resources to advance independent innovation—enhancing capabilities through introduction, digestion, and absorption of new knowledge. Looking back on NHU’s development, we have consistently embraced openness and collaboration, striving to lead in both technology and products.
In 1988, NHU began as a small waste alcohol recycling plant founded in Xinchang County. Over more than 30 years, it has grown from humble beginnings into a leading innovation-driven enterprise at scale. This journey has been fueled by both innovation and collaboration.
Innovation is the driving force behind NHU’s growth and the source of its core competitiveness. True innovation requires not only dedication, but also openness and complementary strengths. Early on, NHU established its R&D philosophy of being “demand-oriented and internal-external coordinated.” Over the years, collaborations with research institutions and industry partners have continuously powered our innovation efforts.
A notable example is NHU’s collaboration with professors Li Haoran and Chen Zhirong from Zhejiang University. In early 1992, we encountered a technical bottleneck in continuous chemical processing. After multiple unsuccessful attempts, the two professors were invited to provide on-site guidance and quickly resolved the issue. This marked the beginning of a long-term partnership. Through joint innovation between industry and academia, NHU has since achieved breakthroughs in large-scale industrialization of key products such as vitamin E, vitamin A, and methionine—addressing critical “bottleneck” technologies and creating significant value for the society.
These collaborations have reinforced NHU’s belief in the importance of openness. Today, we have established long-term partnerships with leading institutions such as Zhejiang University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jiangnan University, and the Technical University of Denmark, building an innovation chain that spans from fundamental research to applied development. NHU has also developed two core innovation platforms—“Chemistry+” and “Biology+.” In addition, we collaborate with leading enterprises such as Sinopec and Toyobo, leveraging complementary strengths to drive high-quality industrial development. Through open collaboration in both technology and industry, new technologies and products continue to emerge, injecting sustained momentum into NHU’s growth.
As the global economic landscape is being reshaped and technological transformation accelerates, NHU will continue to embrace openness—strengthening collaborative innovation and industrial partnerships with leading global universities, research institutions, and enterprises, and bringing the power of collaborative innovation to the world.
